A Basic Guide to Flood Lights

If you’ve watched a concert or major sporting event, you are all too familiar with bright lights flooding the surroundings, providing outstanding illumination. This type of lighting is produced by floodlights which are essential when the conditions have relatively low natural light. Floodlights make it possible to host events in the evening with the highest quality lighting conditions necessary for spectators to fully enjoy the moment. Aside from sporting events and concerts, floodlights are also used for:

  • Security. More and more homes and commercial establishments today use LED flood lights for enhanced security. With a sensor-operated floodlight, for example, trespassers and burglars are deterred from entering the property because any slight movement will trigger the lights and flood the area brightly.
  • Theatre lights. Floodlights are also very useful when used for stage lighting. Plays and other events can manipulate floodlights to suit the requirements of the event.
  • Emergency lighting service. Floodlights produce a high, powerful beam which is quite useful during emergency situations such as conducting a search and rescue.

Floodlights have been around for quite some time and are available in different technologies. Aside from LED floodlights, other types of floodlights include halogen, sodium vapour, and metal halide.

The advantage of using LED floodlights

These days, LED floodlights are the preferred type because of their many benefits. There is no question that if you are looking for floodlights, choosing LED lights is better because:

  • LED lights are proven to have a longer lifespan. There are LED floodlights that can last up to 50,000 hours of consistent use.
  • LED floodlights are economical to use and consume less power.
  • LED lights are naturally bright, so a little goes a long way.
  • LED floodlights can produce a zoned beam which you can direct to a specific area, instead of creating a dispersed glow.

Because of these benefits, LED floodlights have proved to be the superior lighting technology suitable for a variety of applications.

Different floodlight positioning options

If floodlights are to be used in large areas, you’ll need to arrange them in specific locations to get maximum lighting effect. If you are using floodlights to illuminate a sports arena, for example, you’ll need to choose particular areas to install them so that the resulting effect is similar to sunlight at midday. Depending on the requirements of the area, the following are typical examples of positioning floodlights:

  • Small floodlights attached to a building façade or trees outside.
  • For easier maintenance, floodlights can work in a suspended installation.
  • Construct posts or towers specifically for floodlight installation.
  • Floor-recessed installation.

Although it is a common assumption by many people that floodlights are only relevant for large areas like sports arenas and stadiums, LED floodlights are available in a variety of sizes which make them suitable for different installation purposes. As mentioned in an earlier example, floodlights are also becoming more popular as a lighting solution for residential exteriors in order to reinforce security. LED floodlights are not only versatile, but also an environment-friendly and economical lighting solution.
