Don’t Try This at Home: The 7 Most Dangerous DIYs

The thrill of getting something done all on your own, and then being able to proudly look at it day in, day out, is absolutely magical. Add this to the fact that owning a home is one of those things that can very easily become extremely costly, and what results is that many people are tempted to do as much of the work around their house on their own. There is, of course, nothing wrong with that, except for when things can get dangerous. If this is the case, then a specialist should be called in, and allowed to do their job.

Gas Repair

This is the type of project where you should call a gas safe registered engineer without even thinking about it. The big issue here is that natural gas, unless having other odors injected in it, has no smell whatsoever. Moreover, it is also clear, which means that if there’s a leak, you won’t be able to tell. Add to all of this the fact that it is deadly, either causing explosions or carbon monoxide poisoning when it is leaking, and you’ve got disaster spelled out. With this in mind, DIY-ers should stay away from this sort of work.

Getting Rid of Asbestos

In the past, asbestos were used quite often for home insulation. The issue with them? If inhaled, they’re deadly. Because of how dangerous they are, there are also laws in place for disposing of it. With all of this in mind, it becomes quite clear why calling in a professional is the way to go when it comes to asbestos removal.

Roof Repair

Repairing or replacing the roof is extremely expensive, which is why many people consider doing at least some of the work on their own. However, the trouble here is that the risk of slipping and falling, leading to fatal injuries is quite high. Since this kind of work also requires you to climb up and down a ladder quite a bit, there’s also the risk of you falling off of that. This is why a specialist should be allowed to do all the work.

Pest Removal

The poisons used for killing pests are just that: poisons. This means that they’re toxic not just to the pests, but also to pets, and even children. With that in mind, it’s best to have a professional come in and figure out how to best deal with the nuisance.

Electrical Work

If wires are not placed properly, they can start a fire, which can potentially burn the entire place done. As such, this kind of work should not be attempted by someone with no to little training.

Cutting Down Big Trees

If you’ve got a tree that’s dying, you’re probably already aware that you should do your best to get rid of it as soon as possible, since they can fall down, destroying everything around them, or even leading to serious injuries. However, you should not attempt to do this on your own, since you could drop the whole thing on your, or someone else’s house, potentially hurting someone in the process.

Removing Walls

While breaking walls down may give you quite the thrill, tearing down one that is load bearing may lead to your entire home collapsing. As such, the best thing to do is to consult a professional to ensure that this is not the case, and then if you really want to do it, you can talk to them to allow you to sledgehammer it down.

While some DIY projects are lots and lots of fun, others are extremely dangerous. For the latter kind, you should make sure to call someone who was trained and licensed for the job, since they will know how to tackle it correctly and efficiently.
