5 Tips for A DIY Home Security Installation

Installing your home security system by yourself is easier than you think and more affordable than having one installed by a security professional. There are many different security systems on the market today so once you have decided on your specific needs for your security system, do your research on the systems available until you find the one that is right for you and your family. Once you have bought one, follow these tips for a smooth and seamless installation.

Get a Smart Hub

I highly recommend getting a smart hub with a digital assistant to pair with your smart home security system. This hub will act as the brain for your entire home, not just your security system. This is not necessary for the security system to function, almost all DIY home security systems can function without a smart hub. All the smart hub will do is allow you to sync your security system with other smart home devices like appliances, thermostats, light bulbs, and even control your home media server.

Choose Where to Place the Sensors

All Vivint alarm systems come with door and window alarm sensors. The sensors are normally applied via an easy to use peel and stick backing that will hold them in place but also allow you to move these around within your home if the need arises. Put some thought into the placement of these sensors and detectors, try and view your home from a would-be robber’s perspective and then place them accordingly.

Install Your Wireless Home Security System

This tip is for those of us who have chosen to avoid the inconvenience of drilling holes and running wires by opting for a wireless home security system. Choose a place near your main entry door or front door to install the panel. You can either hammer a small nail into the wall to mount the panel on or you can opt to use double-sided tape instead. Place your panel close enough to the door to allow you and your family adequate time to exit your home upon arming your alarm.

Choose the Right Motion Detector

If you have decided that your property could benefit from a motion detector to light up a dark driveway or a dark corner then all you will need is a 4-in-1 screwdriver, a voltage tester and a wire stripping tool and following these steps. Not all motion detectors are the same and indoor ones could be different to outdoor ones so make sure you have assessed your needs before purchasing them. You can prevent unwanted nuisance trips by carefully considering the detector’s field of view.

Choose Your Service Type

Most home security systems use a subscription-based monitoring system. This is recommended if something goes wrong, these services can be set up to ensure that the fire department or police are dispatched if the need arises. If you do not want these additional costs, then you can choose an intelligent system that supports self-monitoring instead.
